Velvet always evokes this feeling of luxury, it’s a beautiful, textured, tactile fabric that always gives you a feeling of glamour and decadence.
Velvet sofas are on the rise again (if indeed they ever went away!) and there are a brilliant choice of colours and shapes to please everyone – and they’re not as expensive as you might think.
If you want a bit of glamour and comfort in your life especially as we move into autumn (where we turn to blankets and warmer colours) then why not have a look for a lovely velvet sofa? Take a look at my current favourites out in the market today:
First up, trusty IKEA and their excellent Stockholm collection. The Stockholm collection features classic styles and shapes at affordable prices. Sure it might be a little higher than other IKEA prices but the collection is not likely to go out of style quickly and is more an investment piece. This sofa is available in three colours, a grey, a gorgeous Navy and is priced from £895 but if I had the guts I’d love to go for this dark orange and I’d probably want to paint or stain those legs a little darker. This one is also good for you if you have a disability as the high arms help with getting on and off the sofa:

In case you hadn’t heard, Dulux have announced their Colour of the Year for 2018, a dusky, sultry lilac called Heartwood – and if you want to get ahead of the dusky game you couldn’t do much better than this gorgeous “Bailey”sofa from DFS in collaboration with the Sofa Workshop. The colour is perfectly aligned with Heartwood and is a calm neutral that would look great pared with some darker cushions such as navy or green. Less useful for disabled people as the arms are low but it does have a high back which could be more supportive.
This is priced at £1599 and gets you right on trend for 2018 and the new neutrals, cocooning colours that are warm and welcoming:

At the other end of the price scale, this absolute beauty from Heals is called Balmoral and is available in a wide variety of colours but I have to say I LOVE this dark, rich Navy or Petrol colour. Prices are around the £3499 mark depending on fabric and finish. A really beautiful investment. I wouldn’t recommend eating your egg and chips off it!
This would look lovely dressed with some blush pink or dark pink cushions, really capitalise on the combination of the jewel colours. Good height on the arms too for assistance getting in and out safely.

A sofa roundup wouldn’t be complete without a Chesterfield, and a velvet one at that! This is a style that will never go out of fashion of course and this “Winston” version from Swoon Editions comes in a number of colours and finishes. I quite like this silver grey, although we once had a grey velvet sofa that was never the same after Mr Wheel Chic Home dropped a spoon of chilli con carne on it. So my recommendation is to keep this in the living room away from the food!
The Chesterfield is a sofa that can feel very grand but can also feel familiar and cosy with a blanket and a cuppa. The strength and height of the arms is great although the back is a little lower so perhaps less support on the back.

One of the most famous sofas on Instagram belongs to Nicola Broughton, she of the excellent blog The Girl with the Green Sofa. Hers comes from made.com and is beautiful, but for this round up I’ve chosen this beautiful teal blue coloured “Rosamund” sofa also from made.com which regularly retails around £1199.
I love the curvy shape of the arms and it just looks like something you can fall into and put your feet up. The arms perhaps not great for Mr Wheel Chic Home as he needs a bit more height.
However, that colour is something else. I love teal, it’s rich and warm and decadent.
Pair this with some bright pink, green or yellow cushions and you’re on a winner.

I can’t finish up a discussion of velvet sofas without looking at a chaise can I? I mean this is surely the height of decadence. I just need someone feeding me grapes and champagne and it’ll be all lovely!
This one is called Lockley and is from the fabulous Sweetpea and Willow. It’s just all kinds of gorgeous – the sweeping curvy shape looks like it’ll be cosy with a dressing gown, blanket, box of chocolates and some interiors magazines to wander through. I love the shape of this, it’s classic yet with a modern twist. It regularly retails from around the £1000 mark depending on the fabric and the finishes chosen. There’s so many different fabrics to choose from you’ll be spoilt for choice. If only I had the room for it (Sigh!). No comment here on whether it would be suitable for Mr WCH but then this would be mine. All mine!
